UMACUnited: 2009 Year in Review

As 2009 ends, we can’t help but reflect on what a whirlwind year it’s been for music.  To say this year was full of highs and lows would be a vast understatement. While we all experienced the overwhelmingly gut-wrenching loss of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, sharing in the grief globally, closer to home, we were shocked by the unexpected death of our own royalty, Haydain Neale of JackSoul.  In fact, this year will go down in the books for marking the loss of some of music’s most creative, innovative and influential artists, including DJ AM, Roc Raida, Baatin of Slum Village and the legendary Mr. Magic.

As the world embraced a historical first, the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States, we watched with maple pride as former UMAC: Urban X-Posure performer Drake leapt from acting and being an MC heavy on the mixtape grind to becoming a Grammy nominated artist with arguably one of the MOST anticipated debut albums we’ve seen in a years!  His ascent has been unprecedented & UMAC is glad to have been at the genesis of what looks to be a soon-to-be remarkable career.  With Boi-1da, who participated on our Producers’ Panel at UX: Triple Threat  this past summer, and Melanie Fiona also getting Grammy nods, it feels like A Change Gon’ Come. Canadian urban musicians artists from coast to coast are beginning to receive more worldwide attention & this country is now being recognized as a hotbed of urban music talent.

Grand Analog and k-os seized top selling spots on the iTunes Biggest Selling Singles Chart for 2009, K’Naan‘s song of hope, Waving Flag was named the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup & producers such as Rich Kidd, MoSS, Marco Polo, Tone Mason and T-Minus pushed the envelope, teaming up with some of the industry’s biggest names.  All are set to take the world by storm!  Are you ready?

UMAC’s added some new faces to the team, including producer/songwriter Derek Brin, as Director of Artist Relations,  DJ/publicist Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley comes aboard as Director of Communications and social networking whiz Peter Chiappetta, our newly appointed Coordinator, Viral Marketing and Development.

Always at the forefront of everything musically urban, the first quarter of 2010 is already shaping up to be heavy for UMAC.  You’ll see The Association in deep participACTION at CMW, Canadian Music Week & the ECMAs, East Coast Music Awards in March and at the Junos in St. John’s in April. But, setting off the new year Queen Latifah-style at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre is Urban X-Posure: SoWhatChuSayin’? on Feb. 13th, 2010. UX is is a multi platform event focused on Hip Hop and Spoken Word being actively used as art forms for social change. It’s a day where consciousness in rap music and spoken word gets rewarded! Literally!!!

Included in UX: SoWhatChuSayin’? is an artist showcase/contest that awards the most talented conscious wordsmiths and raptivist rhymers who can perform the best positive lyrical expressions with swag. A cash prize will be divided between the top 3 finalists.  There will be an open infotainment forum in the round that features organizations who marry art with commerce and activism.   Youth will have an opportunity to get involved with various organizations across the city.  The event will broadcast live-to-air on the Mixtape Massacre Show at CKLN 88.1 FM.  The entrance fee is $5 for non-UMAC members; free for current UMAC members.

Need your UMAC hook-up? Membership is easier than you think and most definitely has its privileges.  Contact submissions@umacunited.com  or check www.umacunited.com for more info!

On behalf of the whole team at UMAC, The Urban Music Association of Canada, we wish you a healthy and successful 2010!

UMAC Announces New Board Members and Advisors

UMAC Announces New Board Members and Advisors
Urban Music Association of Canada Welcomes New Faces for 2010

For Immediate Release

Toronto – UMAC is pleased to announce that it has added two new faces to its list of Board Members.  Derek Brin has accepted the position of Director of Artist Relations, while Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley, has accepted the role of Director of Communications.  Of the two new Board Members, UMAC President Will Strickland says: “Derek and Mel represent two of our best and brightest lights, shining prominently on Canadian urban music and this industry as a whole.  UMAC is proud to have them on the squad and looks forward to growing and creating great things with them both!”  Other recent changes in the Board include the departures of Katrina Lopes, former Vice President, and Miro Oballa, former Business Affairs Director.  The two will remain ac tive with the organization in advisory positions.

A producer and song writer who has worked with international artists, Derek Brin’s long list of accomplishments make him a prime choice for the role of Director of Artist Relations.  He is the epitome of preparing Canadian artists to become ‘export-ready’, and has already worked with and mentored Canadian artists such as Massari, Syrai, and Dru.  He has collaborated with Ne-Yo, Guy Roche, Diane Warren and Canadian Idols Kalan Porter & Ryan Malcolm, and co-wrote a song with R&B crooner Jaheim for his last album, which entered #1 on the Billboard Charts.  “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of UMAC – a Canadian organization actually affecting change”, says Brin. “I look forward to being a part of the process and throwing a few ideas in the mix that I know are effective with other organizations outside of Canad a and little things that helped my career in some way.”
Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley wears several hats in Canada’s urban music landscape.  As a DJ, her roots are deeply embedded in college radio, formerly at CHRY 105.5FM, and currently at CKLN 88.1FM, where she’s the co-host/co-DJ for Droppin’ Dimez Radio, Canada’s only all-female hip hop show.  Also a Freelance Writer and Publicist, Mel has had the opportunity to interview some of music’s finest artists including Common, KRS-One, and Flo’etry, and has done PR for a variety of artists and events, from Jully Black to Caribana.  Through working with one of the largest urban DJ pools in the country, Mel has collaborated with DJs, music labels, producers and independent artists on an international level.   She was recently named one of Toronto’s Most Inspiring Women in the Creative Arts by Luminato’s Mille Femmes Project. “For years, UMAC has been the voice of the national urban music community,” says Melissa. ” I’m ecstatic to become an active part of this organization, particularly at this stage of development for urban music in Canada.”
In addition, an open UMAC Board Officer’s role was filled with the addition of Peter Chiapetta as the new Coordinator, Viral Marketing and Development.  “I’m very grateful and excited at this opportunity,” says Peter. “UMAC has always been at the forefront when it comes to developing and promoting our homegrown talent.  For years, Canada has been home to some of the most talented artists, producers, performers, and songwriters.  I look forward to being a part of, as well as contributing to, UMAC’s tradition and commitment to Canada’s urban music scene; working alongside the rest of the board, local artists and our members.”

Important Eligibility Changes for Funding – Good to Know!

This update was actually released a few months ago, but it’s still seems to be relatively unknown, especially by some of our indie artists.  With all the resources musicians have in Canada when it comes to creating, promoting and distributing music, it’s only logical to include them in your business plan.  If  you’re a Canadian artist planning to release some music in 2010 – this is for you!!

The FACTOR Board of Directors has made a significant change to the eligibility requirements surrounding MAPL and CANCON.

MAPL Criteria
The components which make up the criteria for Canadian Content (CANCON) are: Music, Artist, Production, and Lyrics (MAPL).  Two parts must be 100% Canadian to qualify as Canadian Content (CANCON).

FACTOR Policy Surrounding MAPL
Prior FACTOR policy stated that to qualify for funding, the Artist and Production components of MAPL must always be Canadian.

Changes To Policy
Effective July 1st, 2009 the new FACTOR policy states:
·        The Artist must be Canadian.
·        At least one other part of the sound recording, Music, Lyrics or Production must be Canadian.

Applicants should be reminded that any costs incurred in non-Canadian Facilities or by non-Canadians will continue to be deemed ineligible for FACTOR funding.

“I believe that the Board’s decision to make this adjustment to its criteria will enable artists to make the best choices for their projects”, says Heather Ostertag, FACTOR’s President and CEO.  “It will also better serve the needs of Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters.”

For further information regarding FACTOR’s policy surrounding CANCON and the MAPL criteria please contact Julia Train, Communications Manager (FACTOR) 416-696-2215 ext.223

About FACTOR: FACTOR is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing financial assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent recording industry. Funding comes from two sources, The Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Music Fund and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters.

AND NOW A WORD OR TWO FROM… Will

 When the Day is Dark, The Supreme Being gives us Light;

            When We are Weak, He gives us Might;

When We Need to Touch the Sky, He gives us Flight

But when We get Too Fly, The Most High gives us Plight…

In Life, we rarely get anything we cannot handle.  The past couple years reinventing UMAC has been a labor of love & a labor of labor.  Plight is a polite way to say this has been hard as hell.  I wanted to try to do it alone, but even the strongest of us need help, so I got on my Queen Latifah & started thinking of U.N.I.T.Y.  Long story short, UMAC’s Back! The Association is flying its new flag with the help of some great people & our strategic partnerships.

Partnerships… They are fragile things at best in business & even more so in the urban community.  There are entities at work in Canada who encourage young artists to collaborate & work together to make a bigger, better Canadian urban music scene.  But how hypocritical are we to push that agenda on the urban music practitioners when most of the facilitating artist advocacy bodies don’t work together, though claiming the same aims & ends?  Agents of change cannibalizing the efforts of one another supports the “Crab In A Bucket” adage, whether directly or indirectly, intentional or otherwise.  UMAC’s out to smash that mentality!

Life is good…Summer’s coming, UMAC has an incredible new website & an even better new Board of Directors, full of professionals vested in seeing Canadian urban music reach the highest of heights & the artists & cultural entrepreneurs develop into leaders in this country & abroad.  But…Life could be better and only better with YOUR PARTICIPATION!  It is a collective effort.  UMAC will do what we can to provide viable opportunities for education & exposure to ensure established, tangible & necessary outlets for you to begin the journey toward success. But, if you don’t drink from the well, then…

Keep In Step, Canada! Forget makin’ it hot!  UMAC’s gonna keep it jalapeno…scotch bonnet, whatever!  You name; we flame broil it!  The choice is yours: BBQ or Mildew?

We want you ALL to be down with the hottest crew in the game not rockin’ a chain, stakeholders & shareholders alike!

Until we meet again…Whisper!

 —El Commandant

UMAC ASKS: ARE WE NEXT, CANADA?

Three-Strikes Bill Adopted In France
Courtesy of Billboard.biz

The French Senate has adopted the “Creation and Internet” law by 189
votes in favor and 14 against.

The Senate, which passed the law this morning (May 13), did not amend the draft voted by the National Assembly yesterday, opening the way for its rapid implementation into French law.

The law includes the implementing of a three-strikes scheme under which an independent administrative authority, called HADOPI , would be entitled to collect infringers’ data from their Internet Service Providers as requested by artists’ collecting societies, and other organizations representing rights holders, and to ultimately have
their Internet access cut.

“Creative industries everywhere, including music, film, TV and books, are facing a fundamental challenge from the way online piracy is eroding the ability of creators to get rewarded for their work,” said IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy in a statement.

“In France the government has understood better than any other country the crisis which is looming if firm action is not taken to address the problem. The new French law takes the right approach and sets an example to the rest of the world. It will introduce sensible, proportionate measures that will have a real impact on piracy while respecting ordinary legitimate Internet users.”

WCMAs2

WCMAs & UMAC PARTNER AGAIN TO “HAVE IT YOUR WAY, CANADA!”

As a member driven event, Western Canadian Music Awards staff always loves hearing suggestions on what you would like to see at this year’s WCMA Conference. If there is an industry professional or artist you would like to hear speak at the conference or a topic that you are dying to learn more about, let us know by filling out the Conference Content Survey. All serious suggestions will be added to the current compilation and considered.

The Conference Content form can be filled out at www.westerncanadianmusicawards.ca/conferenceform
Note that we will take consideration of any and all serious suggestions sent, but programming depends greatly on the speakers’ availability.

Thank you for your time. We hope to see you in Brandon, Manitoba September 17-20, 2009.

Returning by popular demand is our Gig Gallery installation. We will again cover the conference rooms with posters that Western Canadian artists have used to promote their music. The artwork posted at last year’s Gig Gallery proved to not only light up the drab hotel walls, but were also great conversation starters. Get your posters in to ensure
your band will be the topic of conversation!

To get your work in, go to www.westerncanadianmusicawards.ca/conference  to get the mail and email information and release form.

VIDEO LIGHT on: THE JEMPRESS

 Jempress

By Stacey Marie Robinson

UMAC Secretary/Coordinator, Operations

The Canadian Reggae Music Awards recently honoured The Jempress as the 2009 Top Reggae Newcomer (Female) for her self-produced single, “Once to Die”.

Born in Scarborough, raised in Toronto and Jamaica, The Jempress has always been a well-rounded artist. Early participation in a range of activities from drama to dance, figure-skating and athletics formulated her attributes of dedication, hard work and a commitment to perfecting her craft. It is no surprise given that she is also a talented songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist as well.

“I love art—all forms of art, so over the years I’ve made an effort to embrace it wholly”, said Jempress. “I was always singing and compiling lyrics. However, after many ups and downs and realizations, it was only last year that I decided to take it to a level that would surpass ‘passionate hobby’. Now that I have started, my purpose is clear to me and I will not be stopping or slowing down in this musical pursuit”.

Representing Canada through her music is important to Jempress, who appreciates that the support she receives at home will help and inspire her to achieve her goals. She credits artists like k-os, Our Lady Peace, Celine Dion, Humble, and her cousin, reggae artist Linkz, for their unique sounds and blessed voices.

“Being a Canadian has influenced my music. The mosaic lifestyle probably helped make it easier for me to experiment with different styles and genres of music and art on a whole because that’s home to me.  My experience of growing up in Canada is embedded in my music.”

The Canadian Reggae Music Award was just the beginning of accolades and recognition for The Jempress in 2009. This summer, she will be performing at the annual Jamaica Day Celebration in Toronto and is also nominated for a Reggae Music Achievement Award in the category of Promising New Artist.

Along with singing, Jempress has also shared her talents with the community through a songwriting workshop called “Strictly My Lyric” that she teaches across Toronto, as well as helping to raise awareness of African-Canadian history through various schools, and within the Tropicana Youth Services community.

“I hope the message [my audience] receives is one of progression. I want women to feel free to express themselves through art without feeling the need to exploit themselves. I want to be a positive and informative force for the youths,” said The Jempress.

“I’m serious about what I’m doing. I’ve set goals and plan to surpass them and appreciate all the love and support I’ve been given so far.”

Stay tuned into the progress of The Jempress, as this inspirational young woman is sure to continue to share her talent on the Canadian urban music and international reggae scenes.
